C\u2019est \u00e0 dire sur un plan perpendiculaire \u00e0 l\u2019axe de pousse du tronc (qui passe par le coeur). Tu pourras donc faire ce petit exercice sur des souches d\u2019arbres fraiches.<\/p><p>Tu dois alors compter le nombre de cernes en partant du coeur, vers la p\u00e9riph\u00e9rie, l\u2019\u00e9corce.<br \/>On peut appeler cela l\u2019\u00e9tude des\u00a0\u00ab\u00a0cercles de vie\u00a0\u00bb\u00a0!<br \/>Heureusement, on n\u2019est pas oblig\u00e9 de couper un arbre pour conna\u00eetre son \u00e2ge\u00a0!<br \/>On utilise alors une tarri\u00e8re. Cette tarri\u00e8re sp\u00e9ciale se nomme \u00ab\u00a0tarri\u00e8re de pressler\u00a0\u00bb (con\u00e7ue par Monsieur Pressler\u00a0!). Cette tarri\u00e8re est creuse et permet de percer l\u2019arbre, tout en r\u00e9cup\u00e9rant un \u00e9chantillon de bois appel\u00e9 \u00ab\u00a0carotte\u00a0\u00bb. Le trou doit-\u00eatre effectu\u00e9 \u00e0 la base du tronc de l\u2019arbre, vers le coeur de celui-ci. La carotte que l\u2019on ressort, donne donc le profil de la coupe tranversale du tronc. On proc\u00e8de alors \u00e0 la m\u00eame manipulation qu\u2019avant.<br \/>Apr\u00e8s l\u2019utilisation de cette tarri\u00e8re, il faut reboucher le trou avec un peu de mastic de greffage. Ainsi, on \u00e9vitera que quelques insectes ou champignons \u00ab\u00a0xylophages\u00a0\u00bb (\u00ab\u00a0qui mangent du bois\u00a0\u00bb) n\u2019abiment l\u2019arbre et le fassent pourrir.<br \/><br \/>Il est tr\u00e8s important de prendre ces mesures, \u00e0 la souche et le plus bas possible. En effet, si on les prends trop haut elles seront fausse. Par exemple \u00e0 2m de haut l\u2019arbre n\u2019aura pas le m\u00eame \u00e2ge (nombre de cernes) qu\u2019\u00e0 la base de son tronc. Pourquoi\u00a0?<br \/>Simplement parce qu\u2019il lui a fallu plusieurs ann\u00e9es pour atteindre cette taille et donc il va manquer des cernes.<br \/>Tu connais les poup\u00e9es russes\u00a0? Celles qui s\u2019emboitent les unes dans les autres\u00a0! Un arbre c\u2019est presque pareil. Chaque ann\u00e9e tu empile un c\u00f4ne (les arbres ont une forme conique\u00a0!) sur les pr\u00e9c\u00e9dents et \u00e0 chaque fois le dernier mis est plus gros. En effet, c\u2019est essences d\u00e9veloppent une couronnes par ann\u00e9e.<br \/>Ceci concerne essentiellement les r\u00e9sineux, mais avec un peu d\u2019exp\u00e9rience, on peut le faire sur les jeunes feuillus.<br \/>Attention\u00a0: Certains r\u00e9sineux sont polycyclique\u00a0! C\u2019est \u00e0 dire qu\u2019ils peuvent faire deux couronnes de branches certaines ann\u00e9es\u00a0! A partir d\u2019un certain \u00e2ge, les branches basses sur le tronc meurent, s\u00e8chent et tombent. Ou tous simplement, les forestiers \u00e9laguent (enl\u00e8ve les branches basses), pour obtenir du bois d\u2019oeuvre \u00ab\u00a0sans d\u00e9fauts\u00a0\u00bb (en particulier, sans noeuds). Dans ce cas, les premi\u00e8re couronnes ne se voient plus et on peut \u00eatre amen\u00e9 \u00e0 rajeunir l\u2019arbre \u00e9tudi\u00e9\u00a0! Certaines essences sont reconnus pour leur tr\u00e8s grande rapidit\u00e9 de pousse. En r\u00e8gle g\u00e9n\u00e9rale, les arbres \u00e0 croissance rapide ont une dur\u00e9e de vie plus courte que les autres essences qui poussent plus lentement.<br \/>La croissance d\u2019un arbre suit plusieurs phases\u00a0:<br \/>La graine se d\u00e9veloppe dans le sol et donne jour \u00e0 un \u00ab\u00a0plant\u00a0\u00bb.<br \/>Ce nouvel arbre va passer par plusieurs stades de v\u00e9g\u00e9tation que l\u2019on nomme couramment\u00a0: fourr\u00e9, puis gaulis, perchis et futaie. Cet arbre peut-\u00eatre appel\u00e9 \u00ab\u00a0brin\u00a0\u00bb ou \u00ab\u00a0baliveau\u00a0\u00bb.<br \/>Au stade d\u2019arbre de futaie, l\u2019arbre est arriv\u00e9 \u00e0 son stade de maturit\u00e9. Il ne grandira plus en hauteur, mais se contentera de grossir et s\u2019\u00e9paississant, jusqu\u2019\u00e0 sa mort. Souvent cette croissance se ralentie progressivement.<br \/>Toutes les essences d\u2019arbres ne pourront pas aller aussi haut, les unes que les autres. Par exemple le saule ne d\u00e9passera pas les 20m \u00e0 maturit\u00e9, tandis qu\u2019un ch\u00eane pourra atteindre environ 35m.
